Paradoxical intention involves confronting a feared situation or thought with the intent to experience it, ultimately reducing its power. Carl Jung explained this concept eloquently, stating, “The more you resist, the more it persists.”
This technique can reduce anxiety through exposure, encourages acceptance and resilience, and breaks patterns of avoidance. Over time, it can reduce stress responses.
Paradoxical intention can be useful to confront phobias or intense anxieties, when traditional relaxation techniques are not working, or to break the cycle of worry. Begin with less intense fears and always practice in a safe and controlled environment. However, this technique is not recommended for severe trauma or fears without professional guidance and should be avoided if it leads to excessive distress.
