Feeling hopeful can be described as having or inspiring optimism about a future event. It’s the light at the end of the tunnel that keeps us going when times are tough. As Helen Keller beautifully expressed, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”
The term hopeful comes from the Old English ‘hopian’, meaning ‘to wish, expect, look forward (to something)’. Just as it suggests, being hopeful propels us to look forward to the future with a positive mindset.
Coping with hopefulness, like any emotion, does present certain challenges. It can be hard to maintain a sense of optimism during difficult times, or when facing adversity. Also, there can be a risk of feeling disappointed if things don’t go exactly as we hoped or expected.
However, there are effective ways to cope with these challenges. Strategies like positive thinking, resilience building, and stress management can help us keep our hope alive even during difficult circumstances.
On the other hand, over-optimism could lead to disappointment, as it can create unrealistic expectations. Depending on specific outcomes for our happiness is also not advisable, as life is unpredictable and things may not always go our way.
When we feel hopeful, we often experience associated feelings such as optimism, anticipation, and confidence. Hopeful thoughts typically revolve around the belief in better times ahead, with ideas like “Things will get better,” “I have faith in the future,” or “I believe in positive outcomes.” Behaviors connected to being hopeful might include planning for the future, taking steps towards our goals, and seeking support when needed.
Some useful coping skills, tools, and resources for nurturing hope include practicing positive affirmations, using visualization techniques, being mindful of the present moment, and regular self-care.
